STEPHEN SAVAGE
Piano
Stephen Savage was born in St. Louis, MO and grew up in the Santa Fe, NM area. In 1971 he came to Boston to attend the New England Conservatory, where he received a Bachelor of Music with Honors in Music Composition in 1975. From 1975 to 1980 he was faculty member of Berklee College of Music, teaching theory (including counterpoint and figured bass), composition, and piano. After further studies at the New England Conservatory (Master of Music in Composition, 1980), and private studies with Charles Banacos, he joined the music theory faculty of its Preparatory School and Continuing Education Division. He was a faculty member at Groton Center for the Arts and Indian Hill Arts, now Indian Hill Music Center, where he also served as Assistant Director. Through outreach programs at these institutions, he worked at the Groton School and Lawrence Academy as a piano teacher, and also assisted at Lawrence Academy as choral accompanist for several years. During his career he has performed as recitalist, orchestral pianist, "cocktail" pianist, keyboardist for various bands, pianist in an improvisational opera group, and has worked at a recording studio in Boston. He recently released "Future Memory," an album of ambient electronic soundscapes and jazz-rock compositions. He continues to teach at the New England Conservatory's Division of Preparatory and Continuing Education, at the Real School of Music in Burlington MA, and at his home studio in Maynard MA.
